We just recently returned from our fall buying trip in Asia and as we walked the aisles of the massive trade fairs we again saw lots of owls. Yes, this cat eared bird has become ubiquitous in the home décor and accessory market. Here is a tidbit to impress your friends at a cocktail party, what do you call a group of owls? The answer according to the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center is “A Parliament”. Take that Alec Trebek!
Why are owls on my mind? Well it is personal. Yes, the “what’s in it for me” mantra holds for owls too. You see I have or should I say had a bird problem. All spring and again this fall an aggressive cardinal kept slamming into the glass front door of my home. This relentless bird especially liked to go after the glass just after sunrise. Do you know what it is like to be awakened at 6:15 by the sound of beak hitting glass? Yes, life is hard. During this recent buying trip I remembered that when I was a boy my dad had purchased a ceramic owl to frighten bothersome birds away.
This brings me to ecommerce. I live in a suburban town where the idea of buying an owl to scare away birds would be the equivalent of shooting Bambi. Decoy owls would be hard to find in the local stores. So with a few clicks I found my way to hundreds of decoy owls on line. It was an eye opening experience. The selection of owl decoys was enormous- every size and shape for every purpose imaginable. I settled on a $29.99 version (delivery free of course!) that had a head that rotates in the wind. It was made to scare crows in farm fields but I figured if it could scare a crow it would absolutely terrify a cardinal. Yes, it works. The aggressive cardinal has disappeared, no doubt hiding crestfallen in his nest. I love owls.
That brings me to jewelry boxes. Did you know if you search owl jewelry boxes, Google comes back with 3,750,000 search results? Among the results are two owl themed jewelry boxes offered by Mele & Co. The larger owl box retails just for $40 features a colorful owl twirling to the “Waltz of the Flowers.” A smaller owl box retails for $30 and showcases a ballerina twirling to the “Waltz of the Flowers.” These are wonderful gifts for the little girl in your life. Just be ready to take a photo of her joyful smile the first time she opens the box and the owl twirls to music. We exist to make those smiles. Happy Holidays!
