Today is December 11th, and it’s still too early for me to start shopping for Christmas. I think this theory dates back to when I first graduated from college and started my professional career in the retail industry. I was just too busy to shop and didn’t start to think about gifts for my family until a couple of days before Christmas. I remember in the old days, and I’m not too old by my standards, retail stores used to take everything off sale three days before Christmas. Why give something away when the customers shopping need to buy a gift. These last minute shoppers might as well pay full price. Today everything is different. The deals get better the closer you to get to Christmas. Retailers need to make their numbers and will do it with extreme discounts.
But, my fondest memories is the year I first became a retail buyer. I was one of the sole males in the buying office surrounded by some very educated women. Two female buyers approached me on December 23rd and asked me what I bought for my newlywed wife. I told them it was too early to shop for her. I heard a gasp from each one, and they both grabbed me by my arms. They led me to the cosmetic counter on the main floor and proceeded to show me what to buy and in what quantity. Needless to say, my wife loved everything, and I was a hero that Christmas. For the next few years while I worked for this retail store, I would search out these two women and ask their advice. One year it was clothing and the next was collectible fine gifts. I hate to say it, but they were right on target each time.
A Mele jewel box is one of those fine collectible gifts. Our jewel boxes are handed down from generation to generation. It’s the perfect gift for Christmas, Mother’s Day or any special occasions. Also, don’t forget about those teachers. A jewel box for a woman teacher or a valet for a male teacher is the best way to say thank you.
